What is traditional chinese medicine?

Traditional Chinese Medicince (TCM) is an ancient theory of medicine that developed in china thousands of years ago.  Of course there were no modern technologies available to determine the cause of disease.  As a result the theories represented within Chinese Medicine were developed with a reliance on an innate knowledge of health and the idea that disease is caused by a disruption to life’s vital energy or Qi.

A simplified explanation of acupuncture’s role in TCM theory is that Qi and blood flow through 12 meridian channels of the body.  Disease and pain is a result of Qi stagnation.  By using acupuncture to insert needles into strategic points along the 12 meridians, the Qi is encouraged to flow freely and the result is a reduction in pain and disease.
